Every day I get nearly 200 emails in my spam box. I spend a few minutes each day deleting the spam mail.
Today I had an “aha” moment, what if I unsubscribe from all the junk mail individually? That way I don’t have to keep deleting the junk mail received from the same source every day. It certainly took more time than I intended, but the benefits were well worth it.
It made me think about my spiritual life. Every day we are exposed to so much junk. From the social media websites we browse, the reality shows we watch, or the gossip we hear.
More and more junk is piled on us. It tends to weigh us down spiritually and emotionally and can cause us to become discouraged.
Here are 4 ways to delete the junk in your life…
1. Only subscribe to what will build you up –
The older I get, the more I learn to appreciate and value my life. I began to cut back on a lot of activities that was only burdening me.
I cut back on hanging out with people who were just bringing me down. I really had to sit back and evaluate each area of my life including my mindset. I called this the “spiritual sweep”.
If it’s not helping me get to the next level in life, I sweep it out the way. It’s time to take control of your life and not allow life to control you.
2. Remove yourself from people, places and things that are not good for you –
My motto is “if they aren’t helping, they are hurting” It’s time to clean your friend list.
Your circle should consist of people who are building you up and making you a better person. You will always have negative people around you, but don’t allow them to change you. The bible encourages us in Romans 12:21,
“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Remember the old saying “Birds of the same feather flock together” Be mindful of the company you keep. Avoid negative and drama heavy TV shows and music. What goes in your eye and ear gates will affect your mind.
3. Send positive messages to yourself daily–
This young lady once said to me, “I wish I had someone to say nice things like that to me every day.”
I told her learn to say nice things to yourself and stop depending on others to build you up.
Every day you should be speaking positive words to yourself. Often times what you do in the morning tends to affect the outlook of your day.
Say a prayer when you open your eyes. Be grateful to see another day. Look in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful. Be kind to yourself.
If you make a mistake don’t beat yourself up, instead encourage yourself that you will do better the next time.
You have the power within to determine your thoughts and control your actions.
4. Delete negativity –
Someone recently asked me how many rebukes I was doing a day.
The question caught me off guard at first but then made perfect sense. The reason why the devil was having so much success getting to me was because I wasn’t rebuking him as much as I should.
The word rebuke means to check, silence or put down. When you rebuke the devil you are simply denouncing the power he has over you. The scripture tells us in Matthew 17:18,
“And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.”
When negative thoughts come to your mind, they’re not coming from God… They’re coming from the devil and should be rebuked immediately.
The more time we spend on the positive things in life, the more we can enjoy life. I will end with one of my favorite scriptures…
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)
