When it’s time to surrender, we can surrender to Christ.
Today I was looking for a present for one of my dear friends. As I walked down the aisle of the store, I came across a sign that simply read, ‘’Be still and know’’.
Quickly shopping last minute and thinking, ‘’This would be perfect for her’’, a sudden pause in my heart heard God say, ‘’No, this is perfect for you’’.
And as God’s timing often does, appear exactly at the right time, I knew this was meant perfectly for me.
Today, having worried a thousand times about not knowing whether to move back home or stay where I am, God just said, ‘’Be still and know’’.
Be still and know that I have good plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11 ),
Be still and know that you can trust in me (Proverbs 3:5-6),
Be still and know that I will direct your steps (Proverbs 16:9).
Above all else, know that you don’t need to know, I am going to take care of you; because when you can’t see the road ahead you can trust that I can.
In our own lives, in our daily and mundane routines we can so often forget, ‘’Be Still and Know’’.
Know that God has it, know that He covers it and know that He is taking care of it.
But how do we get there?
How do we get to a place of such trust that we can leave something or someone that is so precious to us into the hands of a loving God?
How can we let go and let God?
In my own life, I have realized it is simple: Surrender. To let go and let God, we truly have to surrender All.
All that we are, all that we want to be and all the expectations of how we think it should be, we need to give it to Him.
To surrender it all to Him is to trust Him with all. But, surrender is a daily process, a place in the moments of each day, in the midst of our worries where we have a choice we can either hold on or we can let go and let God in faith.
We can pray,” I give it all to you Lord: my hurts, my scars, my frustrations; I trust you with every circumstance I may face and I trust you with the comings and goings of each and every day’’.
An old hymn reminded me of this tonight. Written over a hundred years ago by, J.W. Van DeVenter, the hymn ‘’I Surrender All’’, (one we might all have sung in church) is a perfect reminder of our choice to daily surrender our lives to Christ.
The writer of the hymn himself, wrote out of desperation.
He stood at a cross roads in his own life. Not knowing what path to take, he had two choices: continue his secure job as a teacher, or leave the security and surrender it all to pursue his calling to be an evangelist.
Van DeVenter writes: “ For some time, I had struggled between developing my talents in the field of art and going into full-time evangelistic work. At last the pivotal hour of my life came, and I surrendered all. A new day was ushered into my life.
I became and evangelist and discovered down deep in my soul a talent hitherto unknown to me. God had hidden a song in my heart, and touching a tender chord, he caused me to sing”.
Today, surrender all of your life to Christ, allow Him to reveal your song and by faith watch Him make you sing.
