If your heart is broken today, I want you to know that God is still near.
Heartbreak has a way of making everything feel heavier. You may wake up thinking about what happened. You may replay conversations in your mind, wonder what you could have done differently, or struggle to understand why God allowed something that hurt you so deeply.
Maybe you lost someone you love. Maybe a relationship ended and you never imagined your life without that person. Maybe someone betrayed you, disappointed you, or walked away when you needed them most. Maybe you are grieving something you prayed would turn out differently.
Whatever brought you to this place, God sees you.
And even with a broken heart, you still have a reason to praise Him.
He is still faithful when life does not make sense. He is still good when your circumstances do not feel good.
Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
I love that Scripture because it reminds us that God does not ignore our wounds. He tends to them. He comes close to the places that hurt, including the places we try to hide from everyone else.
Healing may not happen overnight. Some wounds take time. Some days you may feel like you are finally moving forward, and the next day something reminds you of what happened and the pain comes rushing back.
That does not mean God is not working.
You may not be able to see everything He is doing right now, but you can trust that your pain is not beyond His reach. The same God who created you knows exactly how to restore you.
Here are five Bible verses to hold onto when your heart is hurting.
Psalm 34:18
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
There are moments when heartbreak can make God feel far away.
You pray, but you do not feel anything. You read your Bible, but your mind keeps wandering back to what happened. You try to worship, but the tears keep coming.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us that our feelings do not determine God’s proximity.
He is near.
When your heart feels crushed, God does not back away from you. He draws near to you.
You do not have to clean yourself up emotionally before coming into His presence. You do not have to pretend you are okay. You can come to Him crying. You can come confused. You can tell Him that you are angry, disappointed, exhausted, or afraid.
God can handle the truth about how you feel.
Sometimes we think faith means pretending that something does not hurt. It doesn’t. Faith means trusting God with the hurt.
So when your heart is broken and you do not know what else to do, start there.
Tell God the truth.
He is closer than you think.
Isaiah 61:1
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”
This passage from Isaiah pointed forward to the ministry of Jesus. In Luke 4, Jesus read from this passage in the synagogue and declared that the Scripture had been fulfilled.
Think about what that means for someone with a broken heart.
Jesus came for broken people.
He came for people carrying wounds, disappointment, grief, shame, and burdens they could not carry alone.
He came to bind up the brokenhearted.
When something is bound up, it is cared for and protected so that healing can take place. God understands that healing is often a process. He knows which places in your heart are still tender.
You may want God to erase the memory, remove the pain, and make everything feel normal again immediately.
Sometimes He does change situations quickly.
Other times, He walks with us through the healing process.
Either way, you are not healing alone.
Jesus is with you.
Matthew 11:29
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Heartbreak is exhausting.
It does not only affect your emotions. Sometimes you feel it physically. You cannot sleep. You lose your appetite. Your thoughts race. Your body feels tired because your mind never seems to stop.
Jesus invites you to bring that weight to Him.
A yoke was used to join animals together so they could share a workload. Jesus used this familiar picture to teach something beautiful about following Him.
You were never meant to carry everything by yourself.
Some of us pray about something and then pick the burden right back up five minutes later. We tell God we trust Him, then spend the rest of the night trying to figure out how everything is going to work out.
But there comes a point when you have to release what you cannot control.
You cannot rewrite yesterday, but you can give the weight of it to Jesus.
And when you do, He promises something your heart desperately needs.
Rest.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Sometimes the person we struggle the most to forgive is ourselves.
Maybe your heart is broken because of something someone else did. But maybe part of the pain comes from your own choices.
You ignored something you knew was wrong. You stayed too long. You said something you wish you could take back. You made a decision that had consequences you never expected.
You asked God to forgive you, but you are still punishing yourself.
If that is where you are today, remember what Scripture says.
When we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us.
If God has forgiven you, you do not have to spend the rest of your life putting yourself on trial.
Repent. Learn. Grow. Make things right where you can. Then allow God’s grace to meet you there.
Your worst decision does not have to become your identity.
God can redeem mistakes. He can restore what has been damaged. He can teach you through what happened and use even painful chapters to draw you closer to Him.
Receive the forgiveness Jesus paid for and keep walking with God.
1 Corinthians 13:12
“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
One of the hardest parts of heartbreak is not understanding why.
Why did God allow this?
Sometimes God gives us answers.
Sometimes He doesn’t.
There are things happening in our lives that we simply cannot understand from where we are standing today. We see one small piece while God sees the entire picture.
That is where trust becomes necessary.
God is with you in the quiet moments when no one knows you are crying. He is with you when memories suddenly hit you. He is with you when you are trying to move forward but part of your heart still feels stuck in yesterday.
Bring all of it to Him.
You don’t need perfect words.
You don’t need to pretend you are stronger than you are.
You simply need to come.
Your heart may be broken, but it is still in God’s hands.
Healing may take time, but God will be with you through every part of the process.
And one day, you may look back at this season and realize that while you thought everything was falling apart, God was quietly putting pieces of your heart back together.
Prayer
Father, You see every broken place in my heart. You know the pain I carry, the questions I have, and the things I struggle to understand. Please draw near to me and remind me that I am not walking through this alone. Heal the places that still hurt and help me release the things I cannot change. Give me strength for today, peace for my mind, and rest for my soul. Help me trust You even when I don’t understand what You are doing. I believe You can restore what is broken and bring something beautiful from this painful season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
