At times our journey of faith can be very challenging. I really admire Abraham’s testimony in the bible. I think it exemplifies our journey as believers. I love to reflect back on Abrahams journey and how he was able to overcome so many obstacles.
In the New Testament James called him a friend of God (James 2:23) and Paul referred to him as the father of faith (Romans 4:16).
Do you know what it is to be called a friend of God? To me that’s so intimate and personal to be the only one in the bible referred to as a friend of God. That meant Abraham really pleased God in his actions to be called that.
This reminds me that this journey is not an easy journey nor is it for the weak. Abraham’s testimony is still speaking for him today. We are inheritors of the promises of God because of Abraham. One-man’s obedience to God became the father of many. His blessing wasn’t a temporary tangible blessing, it was an everlasting covenant he made with God that was passed down from generation to generation.
So many of us want to enjoy the promises of God, but are not willing to make the sacrifices required. Obedience is a sacrifice that many aren’t willing to make in order to enjoy the type of blessing that will be passed down to our children from generation to generation.
We have to be obedient to the word of God. We have to be willing to go where God instructs us to go and willing to do what He tells us to do.
“The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1)
How many of us can honestly say if God told us to leave the state or country we’re in right now and move to a place where we know no one, we would do it? Will we go obediently or will we ignore God’s voice. If God is telling you to walk away from certain relationships or walk away from a certain job, will you do it? If we can’t learn to be obedient to God’s voice it will cost us our blessings. He wants to bless us, but are we blocking our own blessings?
Matthew 19:29 says, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.”
So why do we find it hard to leave that toxic relationship, job, etc.? Many of us are saying we’re waiting on God, but God is still waiting on us to do what He has told us to do one, three, five or even 10 years ago.
What would have happened if Abraham stayed in the comforts amongst his people? Where would mankind be today? As a result of his faithfulness and obedience to God, God set the children of Israel free. Pharaoh had oppressed them for over 400 years.
Exodus 2:24 say, God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.
I don’t think we understand the magnitude of being obedient to God’s word. Our obedience today will speak on the behalf of our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and so forth after we are long gone. After 400 years God remembered them because of a covenant he established with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
What we do today affects our coming generation. Yes our journey of faith can be challenging at times but in the end it will all be worth it. We will be blessed in abundance and our children will be blessed as a result of our obedience. God will remember them in times of trouble and hardships. As a result of our obedience they will inherit it in Jesus name.
If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land. (Isaiah 1:19)
