I simply smiled as I sat reading a great book titled “Reverse the Generation Curse”. As I talked to God, I began thinking of all the many blessings that he’d bestowed upon me. As I sat on the couch that brisk Sunday afternoon, I glanced over at the china cabinet. In that cabinet, contained our families diplomas and degrees, along with pictures of each graduate proudly exhibiting their joy of accomplishment. As I smiled, memories began flooding my mind like a river. On the day of my college graduation, my car was experiencing trouble. Despite that, Gods grace covered us…

I have a strange, odd (and wasteful) habit; I tote fruit. I’m being serious. I buy fruit with every intention of eating it, but end up carrying it around with me. Apples are my choice victims. I purchase a bag of apples and plan to eat one every day. I’d put one in my lunch bag or purse, but never touch it. Then it’s on my desk, then on the kitchen counter, in the car, in my hand, back in my lunch bag, next to the unhealthy sandwich I’m eating, and then back in my purse or lunch bag. Eventually,…

“For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20  We were running errands. My 5-year-old son was in his spot in the back seat chatting away, mostly asking me for stuff. “Mommy, can I have …?” “Mommy, can you take me …?” “Mommy, can we go to …?” You know that place somewhere between kids being so adorably cute and totally driving you bananas?Yup. I was there. Every answer to his questions was “No.” I was on autopilot:…

Give me your heart, And let your eyes observe my ways. – Proverbs 23:26 What does it exactly mean when we are on the fence about something? It means that we are unsure, we hesitate and we go back and forth about making a definite decision. The same thing happens when we do this with God. I would know, because I did it for many years as I went back and forth to God, but never fully surrendered to Him. For years, anytime that something went terribly wrong, I would pray my hardest and ask God to help me. Once…

We’d reached the frayed edges of autumn, where flurries told us winter had come, and yet the calendar told us the winter solstice was not yet upon us. I pushed my aching body down the road in my weekend routine of a long jog down the dusty roads, and the black dog with pointing ears came at me so hard I screamed in an angry and primal way. I wondered if our long chain of unfortunate events might culminate with an attack from a defensive German shepherd. I questioned whether I should have stayed inside and exercised on the elliptical…

I was lugging my medium-sized purse, filled with panty liners and lip gloss. Over the other shoulder, hanged my work-bag, overstuffed with my laptop and papers still in need of grading. Both of my hands were carrying a crate, that also encompassed my lunch-bag, now empty bowls from lunch, along with my water bottles and coffee mug from the day. With all these things weighing me down, I motioned for my colleague to hold the elevator for me. I was struggling because I was just carrying too much. I was going home to unload. “Wow,you’re carrying a lot of stuff!”…

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. – Psalm 37:7 There were two awful forms of punishment I hated in elementary school: the ruler and nap time. It was the worst thing to hear a teacher say, “Put your heads on the desks!” I could never understand why in the world anyone would want to take a nap when there was so much to do and say! Those words, “Put your heads on the desks” always came at the time when I had something so crucial to say to my friends; usually in relations to a cartoon I…

I almost made it through 30 years of life without getting a traffic ticket. But almost doesn’t count. Just a few weeks ago I was pulled over for an expired tag and registration. I didn’t remember receiving a reminder in the mail but sure enough when I got home and looked through the mail, there it was . .  . still unopened. So there I was with a perfect driving record of almost 15 years . . . tainted. Also, the $25 ticket included almost $200 in court costs. I dreaded the day my court case arrived. It would only…

It happens to all of us. We’ve all been there — or will be there.  – a time of desperation or longing when we cry out to God, “Fix this. Change this. Heal this.” And we hear nothing in response. What does it mean when God is silent in the face of our anguished pleas? When God Is Silent , does it mean He doesn’t care, or worse, He doesn’t even exist? Absolutely not. I’ve experienced the quiet echoes of prayers unanswered. When my mother lay in her hospital bed unconscious, doctors explained that her brain was dead and she’d never…
