I’ll never forget my high school days. I remember walking down those huge halls, surrounded by the buzz of morning chatter and the gossip of the weekend. I can almost still hear the sound of the slamming lockers, and smell the faint odor of cafeteria food looming in the air. Walking down those halls was never an easy task. I always felt like I was on display…like there some sort of a spotlight shining on me, every…where…I…went. It was like constantly being under a magnifying glass- with every flaw being projected to the world in HD. If I’m honest, I struggled…

I think I’ve dreamed about  my wedding from the time I had my first school age crush. From my dress, to my cake,  to my bridesmaids, even down to my groom. He was going to be tall, dark, handsome, and well dressed. Two years ago my dream came true (or so I thought). We met through a mutual friend so I thought right away I had an advantage by bypassing all the serial killers and crazies out there. From what I was told about him, he was a police officer (so that at least meant he didn’t have a record), He was…

Since the beginning of time, woman has been a gift to man. Eve didn’t have to do much to win Adam over in the perfect garden. She probably hadn’t shaved or spent tons of money at the salon and definitely hadn’t learned 50 ways to cook chicken to win Adam over. He knew that she was a gift and he was thankful. Unfortunately today women are doing all they can to convince a guy that they are worth having. Magazine articles, books and well meaning friends and family constantly remind us that we are not doing enough. We are told…

Why hold on to something or someone you know you have to let go of? I traveled to my hometown of New Orleans a few days ago and I made a stop at that the French Market just to take a stroll and check out the vendors. I passed several vendors within the market, but there was one vendor that I passed who happened to stand out the most. I did not have any intentions of stopping at his table, but something prompted me to stop and talk to him. This particular vendor was a poet and a man of…

It was a nippy winter day on the afternoon of January 7th and many folks had taken refuge from the cold by grabbing lunch at the Chick-fil-A on Highway 280 in Inverness. One of the diners who came in that day was a homeless man. We have people come in from time to time – so you kind of know.” And sure enough, Mark’s instinct was correct.…

I grew up in the Deep South in the middle of the Bible belt. Going to church was a way of life for us. We went to church every Sunday and most Wednesdays. And almost everyone I knew did the same. Interestingly, however, my parents rarely went with me. From the time I can remember, I was driven to the front door of the church and dropped off, then picked up after services were done. As I grew older, this made me very uncomfortable. All of my friends had their parents with them. Why couldn’t mine just come to church, too?! One…

God grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference I believe that if you are still affected by it, you haven’t fully moved on from it. If it is affecting your well being, you need to let it go. I know, easier said than done right? Well look at it this way: If you still hate someone who has wronged you in the past, you are still under their “power”. Let go of hatred, and you release yourself from the prison you have created for yourself. Let go of…

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. -Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 4  Most often, the emotion of grief is associated with losing a loved one to death. I’ve learned in this life, that grief is associated with loss: loss of life, loss of a relationship, setbacks, etc. It’s a feeling that wears you down, or some days lift you up on Cloud 9.  I think we can all agree that grief is a part of the…

I wrote this reflection after a field trip I took to a farm with my students in an afterschool program. I hope it blesses you. In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in Him, and He saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in Him; let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation. Isaiah 25:9 The aroma of goat and manure wafted under our noses. Melodies of giggles filled the air and wide brown eyes danced in curiosity. It was a lovely day on the Llama farm. Over a dozen pair of…

Happy New Year beloveds, God saw fit that we awoke to new mercies in 2015. 2014 was a dynamic year with many highs and many lows. I lived, I loved , I traveled , I won ,  I lost, I laughed, I cried, but most of all my faith in God remained the same. I brought 2015 in at watch night service with my mom, sister , and nephew.
